Marriott’s 30 Hotel Brands, Explained

Ever since the merger between Marriott and Starwood was completed in 2016, the combined hotel portfolio now boasts 30 distinct hotel brands encompassing their 7,000+ hotels around the world, most of which allow you to book free nights via the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program.

Needless to say, the fact that there are roughly 30 separate brands gives Marriott loyalists a huge variety of hotels to choose from.

What are the differences between all these brands? What separates a Westin from a Renaissance, or a JW Marriott from a regular Marriott? And which brands are best for maximizing your Marriott Bonvoy elite benefits?

In this video, as someone who’s stayed at a good handful of these hotel brands across my travels, I’ll break down the key characteristics, as well as my impressions and opinions, of these 30 brands to help you choose the right Marriott hotel once the world opens up again.

  1. As someone who normally would stay at a motel 6 for a vacation in San Diego I think the courtyard hotels are a huge step up without being too snobby…. Those fancier brands are for people driving BMWs and the courtyard is for people driving Altimas

  2. Will have to disagree about Courtyards and Four Points being limited service hotels. In Navi Mumbai, the courtyard has 3 restaurants (including one speciality restaurant), roof top bar, 24×7 room service and a cafe. Similarly Fourpoints in Navi Mumbai also has 3 restaurants and full service.

  3. I stayed at the Aloft San Antonio. Weirdest most unprofessional staff ever. Everyone seemed extremely angry. I stayed there multiple times. Always the same.

  4. If you are looking for a place with a great lobby, you can't beat the Moxy hotels. The rooms may be low quality for the price, but the lobbys are excellent; much better than even the high end luxury hotels that you mentioned. Their food is terrible, but everything else about their lobby/bar areas are significantly better, despite their significantly lower price.

  5. Moxy is great value for redeeming my points. Being a lower category number than full service hotels you really do get more upgrades and better service on your membership (I'm always either Plat/Titanium) and traveling solo I love meeting other people in the social spaces.

  6. Marriott members should see this video and see the differences between all the brands, it is really interesting how they request free breakfast and free parking on every single hotel brand they go, and if they don't get the way they want they write an bad review for the property, I been a Titanium elite member for the past few years and I read the information of how every brand works, definitely some brands are good, their employees are awesome (housekeepers put a lot effort and dedication), thank you for providing a great service.

  7. Courtyard Penang was so nice! Similar to your choice. They had a free buffet breakfast with tons of options. Because of the blend of cultures in Penang you had a lot of options. Very nice!

  8. I'm scared to stay there if one of their staff comes up and approaches me I could be woken up in the middle of the night and told to leave and have my career ruined. Marriott is a dangerous place for men. Black men white men Hispanic men don't go there you could have your lives ruined! All you got to do is ask Michael. And here they were told by a judge to release the video and they wouldn't even abide by that, what does that tell you about a large company, they're going to do what they want to do regardless of the law!

  9. I have stayed at AC Hotels (Dominican Republic), Ritz Carlton (Grand Cayman, Toronto and Atlanta), Mariott (Washington, DC), JW Mariott, (Washington, DC), Gaylord National Harbor. This was great video. Thank you

  10. Gaylord Rockies is amazing offering different attractions throughout the year. They have the biggest flat screen tv in Colorado in mountain pass sports bar. The hotel was actually built around the caboose and track that runs through the grand lodge that was on the property when they purchased the land, along side of a waterfall and river running through the grand lodge of the hotel. Lots of dining and retail options to choose from. They basically have a waterpark in their hotel with several different slides, a wave pole and a lazy river outdoor pool is remain open year-round with heated ground surrounding. Definitely the perfect getaway!
